About Musica Drummatica

Laila 2025

Musica Drummatica is the artist name under which I present my work in performance, arrangement, and information sharing, with a particular focus on the chromatic tongue drum. The same name is also used across my social media and video channels.

I perform primarily on the chromatic tongue drum and am committed to exploring and expanding the expressive possibilities of the instrument. For me, it is not simply an instrument with an unusual sound, but a means of shaping music through melody, harmony, structure, and arrangement.

The tongue drum is often understood mainly as an instrument of resonance and atmosphere. My own approach goes further than that. I see it as an instrument capable of more clearly melodic playing, the arrangement of existing pieces, and a form of musical expression that includes harmonic beauty as well as melodic beauty. In particular, the chromatic tongue drum set makes it possible to work with a wider range and with semitones than a standard tongue drum, allowing for a broader repertoire and the rendering of more complex harmony. I believe that this instrument has greater musical potential than is currently widely recognised.

This is by no means an unlimited instrument. In practice, the available range is restricted, and most sets cover only around two octaves. For that reason, what matters here is not the possibility of playing everything, but how to decide what to retain, what to omit, and how to preserve both melodic and harmonic beauty within a limited framework. That, to me, is part of the character of the instrument.

A selection of my performance videos, together with short notes on repertoire, arrangement, and musical approach, can be found on the Repertoire and Performance Notes page.

Alongside my work as a player, I am also studying music therapy, and I am particularly interested in musical work with older adults, especially people living with dementia. In addition to my performance work,

I also sell arrangements of selected pieces for the tongue drum. Details of the available sheet music can be found via the mymusic5 link in the footer. These areas of study and practice also shape the way I think about musical clarity, expression within limitation, and the question of what should remain in sound.

This is also still a field in which publicly available information remains limited. Clear and well-organised material on terminology, makers, players, playing approaches, and repertoire is still relatively difficult to find.

For this reason, Musica Drummatica is not only a performance activity, but also an effort to organise and share information related to the chromatic tongue drum. This website is intended both as a presentation of that work and as a place where information on this still small field can be gathered in a form that is easier to find and more widely consulted.

Wherever possible, the information presented here is organised on the basis of publicly available sources. Because this is a field in which information is still limited, I try to distinguish between what can be confirmed and what remains uncertain, and to make definitions and selection criteria explicit where needed.
